all right so we're back here to record more questions this is batch number four we've done some previous ones with u Pastor Mike and with um Dr renan and Dr rellos so glad to have Pastor cam with us so welcome here thank you good to be here yeah yeah this is question 34 already done 33 so okay wow we'll see how many we get through um so this question I'm not going to read the question that was given it'll just I think it's just not something we should answer here um so I kind of rephrase is how um how much marriage counseling should pastors be able to provide like should they um and you can't be experts on everything as you say right so um what's I always lik in pastoral Ministry to your your general practitioner your family doctor he can troubleshoot quite a few things but sometimes people need Specialists so if somebody needs Specialists then I think a good pastor has some names or numbers that he can refer people to to get that more indepth um help for their particular problems but I think for the most part in my observation it usually comes down to a failure to obey God either husband's not loving his wife as Christ loved the church or the wife is not submitting to her husband as unto the Lord usually one or the other or often times both aren't doing what God calls them to do so I think that's a pretty you know in terms of complexity it's pretty simple response you need to repent and obey God and do what he says in terms of your marriage but as I said there are complexities I think there are Specialists and it's fine for for people to go see that seek that out yeah marriage is messy right because PA right back to Genesis 3 so there's a lot of nuance nuances there that's right mhm but you got back you got to be able to help them navigate that somehow right that's right yeah yeah not just reject him say off go talk to the psychologist or hands off I think it's very important that the pastor takes a kick at the can and tries to prescribe some helps and remedies and encouragements and definitely prayer prayer for those people but as I said sometimes it may need a bit more you know a pastor is busy and I don't mean that in a bad way but he's preaching to the whole Church yeahh yeah yeah yeah just look at that question but that's let's leave it there it's so awesome thanks okay so question we received is should Believers be baptized by immersion before taking part in the Lord's Supper um so yeah what is your stance on fencing the table for visitors when it comes to those who are members in good standing at a Christ centered church but we're baptized as infants I think there's something in there that's not quite right either but that's the question that was submitted M okay how would you tackle that well the the first question should uh Believers be baptized by immersion prior to taking the Lord's Supper a simple answer to that question is yes I think we see in the Bible for example uh a particular order a conspicuous order given with regards to the order of the ordinances following conversion for example in the the Great Commission in Matthew 28 at Verse 18 uh we read Christ saying all authority has been given to me in heaven and on Earth go therefore and Make Disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit and then teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you and so we see a we see an order there with regards to First the the uh The Sinner receives the word preached to them they believe they are a made disciple that made disciple is then to be baptized and we're saying here by immersion the the word itself means that exactly by immersion and we see it we see the the Apostle Paul in Romans 6 for example connecting the doctrine of salvation uh to the doctrine of baptism and to Christ's burial and Resurrection itself and so we say yes to the question by immersion because we are buried with Christ in baptism we're we're immersed with him um in his burial with regards to baptism and we come up in the resurrection up from out of the water and so that particular picture of the burial and resurrection of Christ is connected to to baptism at the point of uh immersion and there there are other arguments that can be made but getting back to the order here baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit and then teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you so that would be in that would include the Lord's Supper the institution of the Lord's supper and the fact that the church is to observe that blessed ordinance or Sacrament until the until Christ comes again so so the answer to that question uh is yes and there's there's clear biblical warrant for for an answer of yes yeah yeah so would you actually stop people from taking the supper or is it really on their conscience like how legalistic do you get with it it's a I know Jim want answer that question well you know this comes to policy and polity at the local church level we've always exercised uh grace period in terms of people coming in because we are a very po Baptist heavy Community um the command is given to Believers to participate in the supper I realize there's various degrees of fencing the table um again for me a podc cast is not the place to work all that out or to to deal with all of that so suffice to say realistically or ideally baptized by immersion take the supper MH y yeah yeah I went through that myself and took the supper and realized I wasn't baptized it wasn't right and the issues is not so much taking to sear but being disobedient on baptism right So eventually realized I need to get baptized yeah yeah yeah okay and all right next question is uh short is Hell Eternal the Bible says it is amen it does yeah and it's the same word in Greek used for eternal life as Eternal death that's right so yeah yeah yeah um but yeah the question comes up and oh yeah the question comes up and I get why it comes up cuz there's a psychological difficulty in embracing it um you know when the the grander the more General theological theme is shall not the judge of all the Earth do what is right you know if we have a an actx to grind with a particular Doctrine I think that we need to discipline or chasen ourselves to understand that the The God Who has spoken and The God Who does these things does so according to his infinite wisdom and according to His holy nature and according to his goodness and so while it may have a bit of a shock Factor when we start to parse it out and what that means and it does it's a you know we all have loved ones we have friends or families or we live amongst a people that are you know largely unconverted the thought of them going to hell forever is tough I'm not going to lie to you I'm a human being too but shall not the judge of all the Earth do what is right and there is Gospel Mercy there is Grace there is a a wonderful message concerning our Lord Jesus Christ who lived who died and who was raised again and all those who believe on him shall have everlasting life and I think that it should provide an impetus on the part of the church to be Evangelistic and it should provide an impetus on the part of the unbeliever to really think through the implications of unbelief MH so yeah yeah there's often a connected argument too that comes up from people who are asking that question where they say how can how can God punish one who is finite eternally who has committed these sins in time how can he punish them eternally for something um that that they have done as as finite creatures well I think the answer is simple the transgression have been made against a God who is infinite and so there is an eternal punishment for a violation of those who have sinned against the one who is eternal uh who has made them who has brought them up from Out of the Dust who gives breath in their lungs who gives them goodness um each and every day and and all the while they are I know one one man has pictured the unbeliever as one who is uh who is held in his father's arms and uh the father who has given him everything and he constantly reaches up to slap his father in the face I think that's sort of a it's a picture of the unbeliever uh with respect to the Creator the the one and only living and true God um how can an infinite God punish uh one who is finite eternally because those ones who are finite have sinned against a God who is eternal in the Perfection of his Justice and the concept of punishment or retribution really isn't the issue MH I mean if you know something happened criminally against your family you would be all too happy to see them punished or to see retribution made I mean we live our lives based on that reality that guy should go to jail that guy should be executed so it's not the issue of punishment or retribution I think that's consistently held by by all man it's that God does it and that God does it eternally and that becomes the offense and so I think you know connected to that is a minimization of who God is in terms of his Holiness and righteousness and Justice and just how bad sin is it is transgression against the Divine Majesty that warrants punishment and retribution yeah and teing like universalism and purgatory and limbo that all rounds the corners off those oh yeah it's a psychological attempt to to smooth smooth the rough edges yeah yeah I was kind of surprised me when I started talking to Jehovah Witnesses like five six years ago I didn't realize at first but they don't believe in hell right it's like that totally changes the the discussion right you think you're agreeing on some Basics and you actually don't agree on much at all no yeah that's right okay uh so why join a church like officially join a church it's one thing to attend and and visit and and be faithful but why join a church well I think the the first answer to that question not the only answer but the first answer to that question is because God commands it um and so that's a that's an excellent reason and as Christians we are to uh joyfully receive the commands of God and and Obey with a with a joy-filled compliance because it's our Delight to please the one who has created us who upholds us and who has redeemed us um you know through the precious work of his only begotten son and you know one of the passages I think that that should always come up in a discussion like this is in Hebrews chapter 10 um where we see the Apostle Paul writing explicitly that we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together and in the context it's in the context of the Blessed High priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ who has gone before us with the Perfection of his salvation who appears before the Lord God Almighty as our Eternal intercessor and so the the blessing of going into church is is in that first step of O obedience to God because he calls his people to together GA together because it's therein that he communes it's it's therein that the Lord Jesus Christ walks amongst his lampstands as we read in the Book of Revelation and so getting back to the the the quick and simple answer because the Bible commands it and as Christians we joyfully comply yep not to be contrary but a lot of people don't believe that the Bible commands church membership at the local level but I would suggest that the the scripture specifically the book of Acts indicates that the church could be joined it indicates that the the the church was unified um I think the duties of pastoral Ministry necessitate church membership a pastor at one local church isn't the pastor at every local church he's not the FBI with universal jurisdiction or the CIA um and then the past the responsibilities of persons to their pastors you know person a in church a is not to carry out the Hebrews 13 admonitions to Pastor B in church B and then the discipline discipline assumes local church membership when Jesus says tell it to the church he doesn't mean every single church out there he doesn't mean the the universal church he means the local church to which that particular person is accountable so the Great Commission make the disciples baptize the disciples teach the disciples the teaching of the disciples takes place in the gathered church so yes people should join churches church is also not just a preaching station people look at church only in so far as the preaching well it's not that there's I mean it is that but in addition to that there's the corporate means of Grace there's the celebration of baptism there's the supper there's the accountability one to another there is the discipline of the church so all these things take place in specific contexts in specific memberships and I would just say it's a good and commendable thing to be a part of a local church yeah you know we're we're not Maverick Christians who just go about our life of Christianity as as individ uals don't forsake the assembling of yourselves together as is the manner of some and and part of the the rest of that verse uh speaks about exhorting one another and so much the more as you see the day approaching and as Jim mentioned it's we have this others obligation within the Christian life and that that obtains that takes place within the context of church one of the benefits and the Privileges of being a member in a church is a a veiling of the community of Believers you know we we read in the New Testament as well in in Colossians and Ephesians that one of those Acts or elements of worship is uh singing to one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs our our first Direction and obligation is of course vertical it's godward we're worshiping the Triune God but there's also that horizontal aspect aspect to gathering together in in church for worship and that's to encourage one another to edify one another to sing God's word to one another to sing blessed theology to one another and encourage each other in that act of worship yeah I mean yeah I think a lot of people are just guny or even hurt burned in the past or abused I think that's maybe one some of the reluctance around it right yeah oh yeah yeah yeah it's the analogy of It's A Flock they going be shephered it like many other things though the the argument can never be because something is abused therefore there's no proper use yeah people abuse alcohol people abuse gun ownership but that does not argue against the proper use of the thing MH so I would say people that have been burned or they you know have had a bad experience find a church where you can throw in your lot yeah yeah definely right there mhm okay Faith versus trust are they the same so if you have fear does that mean you don't have faith or trust in God in Matthew it talks about Jesus and the disciples crossing the lake when a storm comes up they were fearful and woke Jesus up he said do you not trust so yeah difference between faith and trust um biblically I don't see much difference between faith and trust I I think a l a lot of people are operating according to kind of that three-fold notion of of Faith so you've got a scent which means to believe propositional Revelation and then there's a belief sort of I guess a little more and then trust rest your soul upon that I don't have a problem with that I'm not convinced that that's you know essentially what the Greek New Testament is teaching my only concern when it comes to some sort of a difference between belief and trust is throwing a Works oriented Nuance on trust as long as somebody doesn't you know well now I've got to do this to seal the deal I've got belief I believe that Jesus lived died was raised again but now I've really got to hold on to that well what then has become the saving instrument is it you really holding on to it or is it the truth that Jesus lived died and was raised again so no problem with that traditional approach um no problem as as well with believing the propositions written in the scripture you know the scripture tells us he who believes is saved and you know to to load that term belief up with more than what Jesus or the apostles do seems to go astray in my understanding and it's not it's not healthy for Christians to to say if I have doubt and if I have fear therefore I must not be yeah truly a Believer absolutely as you see in the New Testament and even with that example um these disciples having saving Faith nevertheless feared and and doubted um you know you look at Luke chap 24 and the account of the resurrected Christ coming to his disciples and teaching them um we see even in that narrative for Joy some doubted and feared um and so someone who has Faith someone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ will be marked by doubt will be marked by fear we're all at different stages in in our lives as Christians um until Christ comes again or we enter into Glory there we're going to be marked by different measures of doubt and fear and that's why God calls us to lean on him as our Rock that's why Christ you know bids us to to constantly come into a veil of his Aid his intercession uh in that sort of things so to be a Christian to say I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ but I have these doubts and these fears am I truly a Believer um saying that acknowledging that and um you know engaging in that self assessment and observation is a good thing because you recognize your your need for Christ your need for God and your your need for growth in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ yeah but yeah I I think we got to get past this whole idea of man I'm struggling with my faith therefore I'm hell Hell Bound Again if if it's my grasp on Christ that is the final deal we're all damned y it's Christ's grasp on us and of course there's going to be struggles from time to time and of course there's going to be some challenges from time to time but you know a chiding by our Lord oh you of little Faith doesn't mean no faith doesn't mean depart from me goat cuz you have no interest in me whatsoever I love what ma said weak Faith may not move mountains but there's one thing weak faith will do it'll bring a soul into salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ so by all means if you've got struggles with faith or you've got weak Faith you know how you deal with that you read your Bible more you learn more scripture you learn more Doctrine you hide God's word in your heart if you're given to worry you you memorize Matthew 6 if you're given to sexual sin you memorize First Peter chapter 2 you're given to those sorts of things flood your mind and heart with the scripture that's going to help booy you and stabilize you so that you can deal with those things amen and and to to sing the same song as as Jim here um to read from our confession chapter 17 paragraph 2 our persever an the perseverance of the Christian doesn't depend upon the strength of their faith it doesn't depend upon whether they they trust or they have the absence of fear the paragraph reads this perseverance of the Saints depends not upon their own free will but upon the immutability of the decree of election flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father upon the efficacy of the Merit and intercession of Jesus Christ and Union with him the oath of God the abiding of his spirit and the seed of God within them it goes on to speak about the the infallibility also of the Covenant of Grace so if someone's doubting and if someone's fearing they shouldn't be saying oh man my as Jim said my grip upon Christ isn't strong enough to keep me in the faith that's not what perseverance is built built upon it's built upon the the fact that the Triune God from first to last midst and throughout has us and when we doubt and When We Fear we go to him in prayer we go to him as Jim said in the reading of the scriptures we we go to church and we Avail of the means of Grace and by the power of the Triune God through the ministry of the Holy Spirit we grow in the grace and in the knowledge of that God and we'll still have fears we'll still have doubts but by God's grace uh we grow until until we enter into Glory yeah okay uh actually bring my own confession next time sorry got another one here somewhere ah there we [Music] go thank you okay what does the bible mean by the unforgivable sin it's also called The U blasphemy against the Holy Spirit mhm yeah I think that there's a connection between that and apostasy and apostas y I think is spelled out in Hebrews 6 and Hebrews 10 so in the gospel record I think specifically the the crime the sin that is being dealt with is that Jesus did Mighty deeds and miracles and his opponents the unbelieving Jews were ascribing that to the Devil Himself and so it's in that context in verse 31 of Matthew 12 therefore I say to you every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men but the blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven men anyone who speaks a word against the son of man it will be forgiven him but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven him either in this age or in the age to come so by their conduct by their rejection by their resistance of our Lord Jesus it was imping the Holy Spirit and I don't think we're supposed to see like as we talked in the last section you know divisions amongst the godhead I think burkoff says it well it is not so much a sin against the person of the Holy Spirit as a sin against his official work in revealing both objectively and subjectively the grace and glory of God in Christ so it is to resist and reject that which God has done here specifically in the Miracles and the signs and the Wonders that are that are attributed to our lord Jesus and then in Hebrews 6 and10 the commonality is to resist and reject what God has done in sending the son of his love who is superior to the old Covenant who is superior to the ironic priesthood who is superior to all these things that you guys want to keep going back to so an apostasy is a defection from the truth it is a rejection of the truth it is in the language of Hebrews 10 to trample again under the underfoot the Son of God so to to to witness the works the power the glory the gospel of God and then just to wholesale reject it and I don't think it's the struggling Saint I don't think it's the little faith guy that's you know am I a Believer or not these people don't want recovery it's not like they're they've committed the unpardonable sin or they've committed apostasy and they feel bad that's not it at all I mean these guys in Matthew 12 not only did they not feel bad but they clamored or Cried Out away with him away with him crucified IED him manipulated pontious pilate such that they that he would be crucified in the same way in those contexts in Hebrews 6 and10 they needed to stay in terms of their profession of faith in Christ and not go back to Temple not go back to Moses not go back to Aaron not that Temple Moses and Aaron were bad but Temple Moses and Aaron pointed to Jesus the substance is here I don't go back to the Shadows to go back to the Shadows was a defection from or an apostasy from the glory of the lordes Jesus Christ mhm but if they like that like the next year actually hear the gospel or they they could come turn around yet right that's right we don't know who a genuine Bonafide apostate is we don't know who a genuine Bonafide reprobate is there's no markers there's no indicators we preach the gospel to Every Creature it's God's will God's work to save his elect and so yeah we don't if somebody no I mean if somebody is a violent apostate or a violent reprobate that doesn't mean we have to keep you know going into their yard while they try to shoot us you know you've got to exercise wisdom Paul says in Romans 12 as far as it depends on you be at peace with all men well I don't think that obligates me to get shot with Buckshot by a reprobate neighbor so so yeah we don't know decisively and we don't know beyond a shadow of a doubt who's a reprobate and who's an apostate that's why I always try to be careful in using that language in preaching or teaching um because we don't know somebody may give expression or give evidences of being an apostate or a reprobate and get convicted and converted yeah and we praise God yeah while there's breath in the lungs there right amen that's how we operate yeah that's right but there is a category of apostate and of reprobate just because we don't know who they are God does so you know and I think that's what those Matthew 12 over the unpardonable sin and the apostasy passages in Hebrews 6:10 I think that's what's going on yeah and if somebody's doubting wondering have I committed that sin is the fact that they're asking that question yeah yeah uh is it okay to have children's Bibles with pictures of Jesus and them I think that's another simple answer I think the answer is no um we uh you know we believe traditionally the you know the the reformed believe uh with respect to the second commandment that images of God and Christ of course are forbidden um and um do you want to elaborate on that one I think yeah that's the the basic argument it's a second commandment violation when you have pictures of Jesus yeah and again I know that there's a lot of people that say well that's not what the second commandment means well we could have that debate or we could have that argument I you know children's Bibles per se picturess children's Bibles I I get the the desire to make it simpler and to make it understandable for children so I don't necessarily have an ax to grind with that but I do think teaching your kids to read and read own Bibles is probably the the number one option again not denigrating the place of a picturess children's Bible or there can be pictures of trees and plants and fish and birds and all that but but um yeah and and you know explaining simply when you read scripture can can can do that work as well yeah I I think there's a you know there's a there's a measure of sentimentality and I think good and intentions on the part of parents and family members because they want their children to learn more uh about God to learn more about the Lord Jesus Christ um and you know to to bring a measure of of excitement and familiarity and and to sort of have some some measure of connection but I you know I think as Jim mentioned um a great exercise would be in instructing those children um in in the word of God from from you know the Bibles that uh that we have um in order that as they grow they're they have a they have a knowledge of language they have a knowledge of these sentences they have a knowledge of the the verses and and how the how the Bible reads and to a veil of the word um and and not images because it is by the word of God that God Saves Sinners and that God and how God edifies his people and uh and so we we go by the word and and and and certainly not by the picture and certainly not by by pictures that uh that violate the second commandment and in the children Bible children's Bible Market some are better than others I think it you know due diligence on the part of the parents to find the good ones you know things that change meaning or things that paraphrase in a way that obscures meaning I would stay away from that just like I'd stay away from a an adult translation obscured rather than shown the light upon the glory of God's word so yeah and if you're going after a children's Bible you know tear out all the pictures and make sure it's a good good accurate summary because that's ultimately what it's going to do it's going to summarize or paraphrase biblical text but it has to do that properly it cannot give up the sense of scripture to communicate to Little Johnny y Y no I agree with that um but I was getting to thinking of Jesus came today well first much the church would reject him but secondly like his his picture would be in the media and everywhere right oh yeah um I don't think he'd say well take it down or don't don't take pictures of me he's like I'm a man right but yeah well and you know I think there's a there's a difference between Christ himself being here and an image construction by the vanity of man's mind they embellish and and in the fullness of the time it was not the age of smartphones and cameras God orchestrated that according to his purpose yeah mhm yeah yeah look at my time and which ones I'm going to cherry pick but um some of these are are interesting let's do this one um I yeah sent this one by email uh the question is why does the devil hate women so much so someone submitted this with a lot of examples of you see it in history burning of widows on funeral P PES the rud of thumb apparently like we use that expression all the time and apparently um you couldn't use a rod thicker than your thumb to beat your your wife in England and Wales in the 1800s M um Afghanistan is still covering and silencing women um OB the every rape the list goes on um so yeah someone just read on somebody's mind or heart of just a lot of evil and oppression more towards women than men um I would suggest theologically I'm familiar with that questioner and and thankfully we've been able to Hash it out a little bit but theologically there may be an ax to grind against a woman from whom the seed of the woman would be born that would crush the devil so the devil certainly would have an active in opposing women if woman was going to be the vehicle by which his destruction was going to come but I think to just you know something that is not obviously common or popular today either outside the church and unfortunately in some in some Churches is that women are the weaker vessel Paul says that or Peter says that in 1 Peter chapter 3 giving honor to the weaker vessel well weaker vessels are more easily victimized and we cannot forget the doctrine of total depravity and the abject wickedness of men and men love to exploit men love to hurt men love to bully and I would suggest that some of that targeting is on women because they're easy easier prey you know the bully doesn't pick on somebody that's a foot taller and is carrying a sidearm you know when you see these mass shootings they're always soft targets they don't have mass shooting at gun shows they don't have mass shootings in you know military installations for the most part they have mass shootings in schools and movie theaters where there's soft targets so and and that's not to denigrate and that's not to offend women I think it's just the opposite Peter specifically says giving honor to them as the weaker vessel if anything we should be you know uh promoting uh protection and stability and security for for women it's just another symptom of God's or man's aggression against the living and true God and is Christ it's God's order that men lead women submit men protect but we invert that and we want to hurt we want to destroy we want to victimize and it's a symptom of our sin MH yep yeah I will put enmity between you and and the woman that's right yeah so attacking family structure sure San hates life women bring life into the world yeah mhm he's obv Pro death [Music] yeah this is a okay question does H dry preaching exist um bit of a longer question but uh greetings in the Lord as a general principle the dry preaching exists is this merely a subjective thing or is there an objective standard by which we can determine Dyer preaching for instance sometimes you hear a sermon and to you it's try but to the person next to you it's the best sermon they ever heard um and is there such a thing as a regenerate pastor preaching a sermon but it is not anointed by the spirit or in a particular sermon it is not done in the power of the spirit I've heard Spurgeon and Lloyd joins I mentioned this on several occasions um I have a few thoughts on that but you can go ahead no you go ahead if you have a few thoughts well I think in terms of dry preaching I should you know just just a couple of thoughts from the hip here um yeah I think there can be dry preaching but I'd rather have dry preaching that's accurate and Orthodox than fiery preaching that is heretical right I mean I think the primary emphasis in preaching is to make known the word of God yeah so exegetical responsibility in handling the text and making clear accurately what the scripture says what the scripture teaches now in terms of how that is done if you go home and you cook a steak and a potato and you pull it out of the oven it will nourish you it will satisfy you it will sustain you but if when you're cooking that steak you throw some onions and some garlic and some mushrooms and then when you pull that potato out you throw lots of butter and salt it sustains and nourishes but there's something about it that's just even more desirous I think preachers should labor to be interesting we are dealing with the most interesting cont content on the face of the Earth that Hollywood or cartoons Captivate the imaginations of people for an hour and a half preaching has the best subject matter and I think that preachers should labor to be interesting the Apostle says that to Timothy let your conduct be known to all or or your progress rather be known to all I don't think that just means in the theological acument or ability but also in preaching preaching is an act of public speaking I remember you know hearing about President Obama what a great public speaker he was I always struggled with that because he says huh and um a lot and I just don't think that's great public speaking and I think if part of our you know part of the task of preaching is to make known the truth of God's word do it in such a way that the People Want it rather than choking down a dry piece of ham you know throw some gravy on there make it you know and I'm not saying make it your own or be Innovative ACC accurately preach the text with a boldness that you believe what the text means and with a Clarity that the people can get and respond to so when it comes to manner I think that's there preach the word be ready in season and out of season convince rebuke exort with all longsuffering and teaching so the teaching deals with yeah that's what you do you teach what the Bible says the manner in which you do it is convince rebuke and exhort now that doesn't mean you have to be a loud preacher it doesn't mean you have to you know scream at people some people are louder some people aren't it's not that but convi convince rebuke and exhort that that indicates that this is more than just a lecture or it's more than just some teaching time you know preaching is teaching but with the hope that the spirit affects the will of the man with the word so that there's change Rod whether from Death to life or whether from you know not too great of sanctification to more sanctification and then I've always thought Matthew 7:12 you know I always have tried to preach the way I want to be preached too and you know the the way that we structure the ministry in our church we go through the Old Testament on Wednesday night uh gospel oriented stuff Gospel of John on Sunday morning and more teaching practical Christian Life stuff on Sunday night I didn't develop that out of any other way than knowing that as a Christian man as a member of a church I'd want to learn the Old Testament I'd want to be tethered into you know jesus' life and Ministry and I'd want to have some practical Christian admonition so you know was it's just a matter of what do people need again the chef or cook analogy y you got to provide nutritious meals for people or they're not going to be you know healthy and well and then the thing about the spirit anointing or not anointing a regenerate person I don't understand that I think that if a man is set apart to preach the word of God and he does it accurately I think and I've known this in my own preaching there's times where I have felt and I know that sounds subjective more help than than others but never have I ever felt alone in the Pulpit it's like llo Jones said I don't know how to define unction I don't know what unction is but I know when I don't have it um so no I can you know in in my time preaching I can never say God left me alone but has there been times where I have sensed more of his presence and power yeah this past Sunday honestly I felt more in the evening than I did in the morning but I don't think the morning I I not that there was an absence of God you know preachers are men too you got a lot of thoughts you got a lot you don't just have the subject matter of things that you need to preach you got people you got family you got your own stuff you got your own life you got all these things and I I've seen a pattern in my life when it comes to a teaching time I clam up around my wife I'm thinking more about this podcast this morning I'm thinking more about the Sunday morning I'm thinking more about Sunday evening and thankfully she's a wife that you know gives me space and doesn't say you know why are you mad at me well it has nothing to do with that there's a lot going on in the of a guy that's going to preach the word yeah yeah uh oh yeah just what came to mind is objectively is like I I reviewed a sermon for brother recently who's starting to preach and there is a rubric right there's a survey you can go through so that is an objective sure thing right so was Christ preach was it text hand AC handled addressing the congregation it's the most interesting thing in the world you know when you look at the book of Acts you see similarities in terms of preaching but so much of what we know of preaching is what we know of preaching has to be three points has to be this has to be that has to be you know there's not that kind of a framework so there's the objectivity make clear what the text is saying make it relevant if in in so far as you can to to the people of God so that they can grow and you know couple of observations Barcelo said he didn't like application I don't know what we're calling it these days but some practical uses that's how the the Puritans would address things you know so the the practical uses how do we take this Doctrine from this passage and what does it mean to me for for my personal use I don't that not only do I not think that's that's a wrong approach I think it's a good approach I think that you know good preaching and but but but application needs to be connected to the text you know sometimes these these concentric circles get pretty far a field you know when you drop a rock in a pond it goes you know I try to keep the lines or keep the circles close enough to the Rock hitting the pond MH it's just it it you know I mentioned this at a Bible study recently it's interesting with pastors pastoral Ministry you know when when it's about time clocks and performance and expectations it's a job but when the pastor asks for money or benefits but but that's your calling that's your vocation that don't you do that for souls and I've often thought and I've been at this now for a few years and I I I think about the Pastoral Ministry and the connection to other jobs and and and that one thing I remain convinced is that pastors need to perform and by perform I don't mean you know Joel stain type I mean let your progress be evident to all growing in your understanding of scripture growing in your knowledge of Theology and being able to preach so that the people of God under your charge are growing and learning I would feel terrible if somebody came to our church and you know mo a majority of the people couldn't answer basic Bible questions that that indicates a failure at some point we could blame the people which typically happens with preachers oh it's the people it could be you too maybe you're not making it clear maybe you're not accurate maybe you're not you know convincing rebuking exhorting as you ought to do so you know this tendency to always blame the people for their deficiencies I I I just I don't appreciate that I I I think it's you know it's kind of like being in Congress or in in Parliament you can do anything you want and there's no accountability you you you you don't ever have to perform you don't ever have to produce and yet you get raises I don't I don't know I just think that we need to make sure that that guys who are preaching and teaching regularly are progressing okay uh what are maybe six to 10 words that aren't in the Bible that help protect its meaning and this has come up a few times in our theology study recently right so I thought hey let's record this what are those handful of words for the Trinity and the okay okay yeah I guess there's other words like inherency there's Canon there's the Omni words yeah well I with that question yeah the the first word that immediately comes to mind is the word Trinity um that's a word not used in the Bible outside of the Bible which uh of probably the the entire list that that is probably the most important one and you know it it reflects um the the Christian Church articulating what the Bible says in order to to protect what what the Bible says and usually uh in these sorts of cases against error um words words like this that are that are given um words like Trinity that uh are given by men are usually forged within the fires of controversy and so they're faced with those who are opposing what the Bible teaches and so they use words outside of the Bible to protect what's in the Bible um and Trinity is is a perfect example in order to it's a a blessed word that reflects the reality that the Bible teaches that there is one God who does eternally exist as Father Son and Holy Spirit and it's a very helpful word to not only positively present present the doctrine of God but also uh negatively apologetically and and polemically defend the truth that the Bible that God himself reveals um in the Bible that he is one um and he is he is one in one sense and three in another sense if you're just asking for a list of words with the assumption that people are going to go find the meanings I would say when it comes to Trinity discussion yeah Inseparable operation Appropriations missions Notions um um consubstantiality uh the omnipresent Omni omniscient omnipotent yeah yeah um not a lot you know again the the the the illiteracy on the doctrine of God it's really it's it's not justifiable mhm you know we're the the Saturday morning book we're presently studying is Scott Swain's introduction to the Trinity I did a page count the other day it's 137 Pages MH I mean we have all these modern conveniences we got phones that do everything we got washing machines that don't happen to be our wives we got dishwasher we can't find time to read a p 137 page book partitive ex aesus is another one partitive exog Jesus definitely looked that one up mhm I haven't learned that yet in few years of theology basically it's ascribing to Christ the one person of Christ in two Natures he does things according to his Humanity he does things according to his divinity that's part of exog Jesus so you're familiar with the concept you just didn't know that identifier yeah yeah yeah and Jim um Jim mentioned consubstantiality after the Trinity after the word Trinity that's probably one of the most important words in the history of the church and the the use of a of an extra biblical term like that or a word outside of the Bible um what we have seen in the history of the church is that Heretics errorists those who oppose truth very often oppose the use of extra biblical words and one of the reasons that they oppose them is that they can't then dishonestly handle the word of God because at the time for example of the NY Creed one of the the points of opposition by the Aryans was the use of words outside of the Bible to protect what was inside of the Bible the the the Defenders of nyine theology or we could simply say the The Defenders of Christianity the The Defenders of truth of what the Bible says um very quickly learned that the Aryans for example and the the radical Aryans the eunomians that would follow them um were using the Bible um using you know the the Simplicity we could say the naked words of the Bible in order to try to articulate and defend their heretical Notions of what they thought the truth was um and obviously they're mishandling the Bible in so doing and not not articulating what the Bible what God in his word is actually communicating but the Defenders Of Truth very quickly realized that that you know God has given us language he has given us uh his Spirit and the use of our words in order to articulate what the Bible says with regards to important aspects of Doctrine and uh you know if we just simply think about the act of preaching you know if we weren't if we weren't allowed to use words outside of the Bible we would never be able to preach a sermon uh we wouldn't be able to pray to God in any way other than by Words which are inside of of the Bible and so God expects and anticipates and and we we might even say um in the scriptures that we have Apostolic command to use words outside of the Bible to protect it earnestly contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the Saints and so words like this are are absolutely important and we have received throughout the century a theological grammar that has been handed down to us by men who have vigorously defended the truth against error yeah I'd say causes and consequences too when you get to justification what's a cause what's a consequence basic grammar terms yeah what yeah basic stuff you know so many of our problems in theology are bypassing basic stuff mhm am I Justified because I believed no I'm justified through faith in the object believed on there's a causes and consequences or causes and effects or you know the big [Music] stuff okay all right I think we're we're done there me yeah got three minutes yeah I can't get much in there in three minutes some of these other ones like um meil headship is a big one oh boy yeah that's not in three minutes nope and then had a question on key theological terms in the Bible that everyone should know or misunderstood right so atonement imputation cool right good stuff so these aren't just from our church uh the these last two I submitted okay right okay cuz you're like yeah you really brought that out you do get some oh all from the states and places so very cool pretty neat well thank you for doing this yeah thanks delight and privilege yeah it's really neat I guess I could move that
