The Vine, the Vinedresser, and the Branches, Part 2
John 15:3–8 sets forth the doctrines of regeneration, justification, and sanctification through the metaphor of the vine and branches. The passage establishes that union with Christ — not moral resolve or covenantal externalism — is both the ground and the sustaining power of the Christian life. The sermon refutes paedo-baptist readings of the text and the health-wealth distortion of Christ's promise of answered prayer, arguing instead that fruitbearing flows necessarily from a living faith-union with the true vine. The exhortation to abide is therefore not a condition of salvation but the calling of those already justified freely by grace.

The wisdom of God in the gospel is displayed not in the nobility, intelligence, or virtue of those he saves, but in his sovereign, gracious election of the weak, the base, and the despised — so that no flesh might glory in his presence. Expounding 1 Corinthians 1:26–31, this sermon identifies the three spiritual blessings Christ has become for his people — righteousness (justification by imputed obedience), sanctification, and redemption (glorification) — as the full ordo salutis secured in union with Christ. The ground of salvation is traced through Romans 5, Philippians 3, Zechariah 3, and Acts 13 to demonstrate that the entire plan of redemption flows from God's sovereign grace, not human merit. The inevitable and proper response of those who have received these blessings is to glory in the Lord alone, not in themselves.
