The Eager Expectation of Creation

Romans 8:19–22 portrays the whole material creation as a witness to the futility brought on by man's fall and as a participant in the hope of final redemption. Working through Paul's personification of creation — its earnest expectation, its subjection to corruption not by its own will but by God's sovereign decree, and its groaning in birth pangs — the sermon argues that the revealing of the sons of God will be simultaneously the liberation of the cosmos from the bondage of corruption. The exposition draws on Isaiah 35 and 55 to show that this is no isolated Pauline theme but a sweep of redemptive history, then presses the three notes Paul strikes: the futurity, the greatness, and the certainty of this cosmic redemption — with a direct call to unbelievers to come to Christ before that day of liberation passes them by.
