The Neglect of Weighty Matters
Jesus condemns the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23:23–24 not for tithing mint, anise, and cumin, but for doing so while neglecting the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. The Pharisaic imbalance is neither ancient nor extinct — the same tendency to obsess over religious minutiae while bypassing the moral and covenantal substance of God's law persists in the church today. Drawing on Micah 6:8, Hosea 6:6, and the broader prophetic tradition, this exposition argues that genuine obedience to God is universal and balanced, not selective and performative.
