The Children of Covenant Liberty

Cameron PorterGalatians 4:21–31

Galatians 4:21–31 presents two covenants through the allegory of Hagar and Sarah, and Paul's argument cuts to the heart of the Judaizing error: those who desire to be under the law have failed to hear what the law itself says about the promise. The Old Covenant, a legal covenant given to the physical posterity of Abraham, produces only bondage; the Covenant of Grace, secured by Christ, produces free heirs of the promise. The sermon draws on Nehemiah Cox, John Spilsbury, and Romans 9 to argue that Abraham's two distinct posterities — one of flesh, one of promise — cannot be conflated without damage to justification by faith alone, with direct implications for Reformed Baptist covenant theology and the proper recipients of baptism.
