2LCF Chapter 14 - Of Saving Faith

Cameron Porter

The 1689 London Baptist Confession chapter 14 ('Of Saving Faith') teaches that saving faith is entirely a divine gift, wrought by the Spirit of Christ through the ministry of the Word, and not a capacity native to fallen man. The chapter unfolds the origin, content, object, and victory of saving faith: its Trinitarian orientation in paragraph 2 (an expansion unique to the Baptist confession), its exclusive resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of the covenant of grace, and its ultimate triumph despite weakness and assault. Believers are exhorted to attend faithfully to the ordained means of grace — Word, baptism, the Lord's Supper, and prayer — as the appointed channels through which faith is not only wrought but continually increased and strengthened.
