2 Kings 16

Jim Butler2 Kings 16

Second Kings 16 records the reign of Ahaz, one of the most wicked kings in Judah's history — a man whose idolatry, political pragmatism, and innovations in worship reveal a heart comprehensively far from God. The sermon works through three movements: Ahaz's child sacrifice and high-place worship (vv. 1–4), his submission to Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria rather than trusting Yahweh's covenant promises (vv. 5–9), and his importation of a Syrian altar and remodeling of the temple (vv. 10–20). The passage serves as a sustained warning against pragmatism over promise, worship innovation over the regulative principle, and the spineless complicity — exemplified by the priest Urijah — that advances evil as surely as outright wickedness does.
