1 Samuel 31
The death of Saul and his sons in 1 Samuel 31 is not merely a military defeat but the judicial end of a king whose reign was marked by persistent unfaithfulness to Yahweh — a verdict the Chronicler renders explicitly in 1 Chronicles 10:13-14. The chapter is examined under three headings: the death of Saul and his sons (with particular attention to Jonathan's steadfast faithfulness), the response of the Philistines (whose pagan celebration is a direct assault on the glory of God), and the kindness of the men of Jabesh-Gilead (who honor Saul out of remembered gratitude for his deliverance of their city in 1 Samuel 11). The study closes by drawing out the relentless fulfillment of God's word across 1 Samuel and calling hearers to faithful, unrecognised service and a consuming concern for the glory of God.
