Genesis 34:1-31
Genesis 34 presents one of the more disturbing episodes in the patriarchal narrative: the rape of Dinah, the calculated retaliation by Simeon and Levi, and Jacob's conspicuous failure of leadership. The exposition argues that the sons of Jacob were not acting out of unbridled blood vengeance but engaged in a deliberate, tactical mission to liberate their sister from what amounted to a hostage situation — an argument that reframes the deceit and slaughter as purposive rather than criminal. Jacob's response stands in sharp contrast to his spiritual high points in chapters 32–33, exposing the ebbs and flows of genuine faith and the truth that God's preservation of his people rests entirely on sovereign grace, not the consistency of the saints.
