Matthew 27 records the layered mockery poured upon Christ at Calvary — by the chief priests, scribes, and elders, and even by the revolutionaries crucified alongside him. The sermon exposes three lines of their reproach: his supposed inability to save, the illegitimacy of his kingship, and the apparent abandonment by his Father. Throughout, the mockers speak more truth than they know, for it is precisely because Christ will not come down from the cross that sinners are saved, and the dying thief stands as the living proof of that saving power exercised in the midst of agony and derision.
