The Warning Against Causing Offense
Matthew 18:5–9 confronts the damning danger of causing offense — the Greek scandalon — to Christ's 'little ones,' those who believe in him. The passage divides the threat into two categories: offenses arising from a godless world that inevitably opposes the people of God, and offenses that arise from within the covenant community through moral corruption and intellectual perversion. Jesus' language is extreme by design — a millstone pulled by a donkey hung around one's neck and cast into the depths of the sea is declared preferable to the eternal consequences awaiting those who ensnare a brother or sister in sin. The sermon calls believers to receive one another with genuine humility, to deal radically with whatever personal sin or liberty causes another to stumble, and to take seriously the eternal weight of their influence within the church.
