2 Samuel 1:1-16

Jim Butler2 Samuel 1:1–16

2 Samuel 1:1–16 records an Amalekite's false report to David claiming credit for Saul's death, and David's swift, severe response. This exposition examines the inconsistencies in the Amalekite's account, David's genuine grief over Saul and the house of Israel despite Saul's wickedness, and the theological weight of fearing to touch the Lord's anointed. Three practical lessons emerge: guarding against self-promotion, cultivating a multifaceted response to divine judgment that avoids bitterness, and living under the motivating power of the fear of God.

The Murderers, The Martyr, The Messiah

Cameron PorterActs 6:8

Acts 6:8–7:60 narrates the trial and martyrdom of Stephen, the first martyr of the church, and this exposition uses that narrative to examine biblical anthropology under three headings: the murderers, the martyr, and the Messiah. The unbelieving council is shown to embody the sevenfold wickedness of Proverbs 6:16–19 — lying, stirring up discord, shedding innocent blood — while Stephen demonstrates composure, Christ-centeredness, and wholesome severity grounded in redemptive history from Genesis to Malachi. Christ's primacy frames everything: His innocence as 'the Just One,' His standing at the right hand of God in judgment over His enemies, and His readiness to receive Stephen's spirit into glory. Hearers are called to repent when indicted by truth rather than gnashing their teeth, to respond to opposition with Christ-exalting composure, and, if yet outside of Christ, to flee to Him before the day of final judgment.
