1 Kings 17

Jim Butler1 Kings 17

1 Kings 17 introduces Elijah the Tishbite as God's appointed answer to the apostasy of Ahab's Israel, where Baalism had displaced the worship of Yahweh. The chapter unfolds in three movements: the drought announced as covenantal judgment, the miraculous provision of the prophet through unclean ravens and a Gentile widow in the very heartland of Baal worship, and the resurrection of the widow's son as the definitive demonstration of Yahweh's sovereignty over life and death. Throughout, the chapter functions as theological preparation for the confrontation at Carmel in chapter 18, while pointing typologically forward to the ministry of Christ, who similarly extended grace to Gentiles and preached sovereign election to a generation that rejected him.
