The Woman and the Pharisee

Rick HoristLuke 7:36–50

Luke 7:36–50 sets two figures in sharp contrast: a nameless woman whose many sins have been forgiven and a self-righteous Pharisee who sees no need of a Savior. The parable of the two debtors exposes the principle that those forgiven much love much, while those who imagine themselves barely indebted show no love at all. Christ's declaration — 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace' — demonstrates that forgiveness is received through God-given faith alone, not through any merit or priestly mediation. The sermon calls believers to let the magnitude of their own forgiveness produce humble, lavish love for Christ and gracious dealings with fellow sinners.
