The Riches of Christ
2 Corinthians 8:9 declares that Christ, though eternally rich as God the Son, became poor in the incarnation so that sinners might become rich through his poverty. This communion meditation works through the pre-existent glory of Christ, the hypostatic union, and the redemptive riches secured by his humiliation — justification, imputation of righteousness, adoption, sanctification, and glorification. The application presses the church to give liberally to those in need, because those who have received the infinite riches of Christ cannot rightly remain tight-fisted toward brothers and sisters who suffer lack.
