The Need for Loving Generosity

Jim ButlerGalatians 6:6–10

Galatians 6:6–10 presses the local church toward three expressions of Spirit-filled generosity: materially supporting those who faithfully preach the Word, trusting the universal law of sowing and reaping, and pursuing a broad yet locally-rooted benevolence toward all, especially the household of faith. The passage is not a prosperity formula but a call to esteem spiritual things, demonstrated by how a congregation treats its pastor and one another. The law of sowing and reaping frames the entire exhortation: to despise the Word is to sow to the flesh and reap corruption; to esteem it is to sow to the Spirit and walk in the life the Spirit produces. The sermon closes with a sustained appeal not to grow weary in unglamorous, unrecognized, faithful Christian living, for in due season the harvest will come.
