Two Types of Theological Speech, Part 1

Jim ButlerMalachi 3:13–15

Malachi 3:13–15 exposes three forms of harsh theological speech that were as common in fifth-century Judah as they are in the twenty-first-century church: the pragmatic complaint that serving God is useless, the mercenary demand that obedience must yield personal profit, and the protest that God's governance is unfair. The sermon argues that each of these postures treats God as a lucky charm whose sole purpose is human happiness, and so constitutes blasphemy against the sovereign Lord of all. The remedy is not self-reformation but the gospel itself — beholding Christ as the chief treasure, the pearl of great price, in whom the believer finds everything that the complainers were wrongly seeking from God.
