The Seventh Commandment, Part 1
Matthew 5:27–30 expounds the seventh commandment, not as new legislation from Christ, but as Christ's faithful exposition of what the law of God has always demanded. Against the Pharisaic reduction of the commandment to its outward, physical expression, Jesus establishes that sinful lust in the heart already constitutes adultery, since God's moral law has always searched the inner man. The sermon traces the eternal and temporal consequences of sexual sin, calls hearers to radical mortification of sin in the manner of verses 29–30, and presses both saint and sinner to seek pardon and righteousness in Christ alone.
