2LCF Chapter 8 - Of Christ the Mediator

Cameron Porter

What is Christology, why does it matter, and how does the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith frame it? This introductory session works through John 17:3, Luke 24, John 20, Acts 5, 1 Corinthians 2, Colossians 1, and related texts to establish four grounds for the importance of Christology: its relation to Scripture, to preaching, to salvation, and to practical Christian living. The confession's account of Christ as mediator — truly God, truly man, two natures inseparably united in one person without conversion, composition, or confusion — is introduced as the doctrinal framework for the series. Hearers are called to approach the study of Christ's person and work not with cold detachment but with the highest reverence and the utmost joy, because eternal life itself consists in knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent.

The Creepers, The Contenders, and The Keeper

Cameron PorterJude

The epistle of Jude addresses a crisis in the early church: ungodly men have crept in unnoticed, turning the grace of God into a license for lewdness and denying the Lord Jesus Christ. This exposition works through Jude's single chapter under three headings — the creeping ones (false teachers characterized by sixfold ungodliness and certain condemnation), the contending ones (the called, sanctified, and preserved who are charged to earnestly defend the faith once for all delivered to the saints), and the one who keeps them (Jesus Christ as keeper, master, eschatological judge, and sender of apostolic messengers). The sermon presses the cessationist and confessional conviction that the canon is closed and the faith delivered once for all, and closes with a call for both unbelievers to flee to Christ and believers to hold fast to gospel doctrine with theological love rather than cold dogmatism.
