The Vainglorious Quest, The Virtuous Path, and The Veracious Contemplation

Cameron PorterJeremiah 9:23–24

Jeremiah 9:23–24 issues a threefold structure: a prohibitive warning against glorying in wisdom, might, or riches; a prescriptive call to glory in the understanding and knowledge of God; and a veracious contemplation of who God is and what He does. The sermon situates these commands within their covenantal context — the inevitable Babylonian judgment upon covenant-breaking Israel under the curses of Deuteronomy 28 — demonstrating that wisdom, strength, and riches will not avail in the face of irreversible divine justice. True glorying is exclusively God's due, and the knowledge of the one living and true God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — is the only wisdom, strength, and riches that profit eternally. Hearers are called to cast off vainglory, grow earnestly in the knowledge of God, and trust in Christ alone, in whom are found all true wisdom, strength, and riches.

The Believer's Commitment to the Lord

Jim ButlerProverbs 3:5–6

Proverbs 3:5–6 commands an entire, exclusive, and exhaustive commitment to Yahweh — a trust that spans salvation and all of ordinary life. The sermon works through three structural elements of the text: the command to trust in the Lord with all the heart, the prohibition against leaning on one's own understanding, and the exhortation to acknowledge God in all one's ways with the promise that He will direct the believer's paths. The doctrine of remaining corruption in the regenerate explains why this command is needed, while the perfections of God — His impassability, immutability, and divine simplicity — ground the assurance that His commitment to His people is equally entire, exclusive, and exhaustive. Hearers are called to search Scripture for explicit texts, implicit applications, and general principles, and to cultivate lives of prayer as a concrete expression of dependence upon God.
