The Good Soldier of Jesus Christ
Paul's commands to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:1–7 address the inevitable reality of hardship in gospel ministry and Christian life, and the apostle equips believers to face it through three vivid analogies: the devoted soldier, the disciplined athlete, and the diligent farmer. A fourth consideration emerges from verse 7 — the dedicated disciple who both thinks seriously and depends on sovereign grace for understanding. The sermon applies these four models not only to ordained ministers but to every Christian, closing with a sustained exhortation to perseverance in the 'middle mile' of the Christian race, grounded in the 1689 London Baptist Confession's doctrine of the perseverance of the saints.
