The Ark of God in Philistia

Jim Butler1 Samuel 5

When the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant and placed it beside Dagon in his temple, they intended to display Yahweh's subservience to their god — but twice Dagon fell prostrate before the Ark, and on the second occasion his head and hands broke off. This sermon expounds 1 Samuel 5 in two movements: the humiliation of Dagon in his own house (vv. 1–5), and the heavy hand of Yahweh striking Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron with devastating judgment (vv. 6–12). The text teaches both the self-sufficiency and supremacy of God, who needs no one to prop him up, and the inexcusable folly of every form of idolatry — including the subtler, coercive idolatry of seeking to manipulate God for personal comfort that threatens the professing church today.
