Deuteronomy 24
Deuteronomy 24:6–25:3 sets forth miscellaneous laws governing pledges, kidnapping, infectious disease, hired labor, personal criminal liability, justice toward the vulnerable, gleaning for the poor, and corporal punishment. Far from being a barbaric ancient code, these statutes display the equity, wisdom, and holiness of God's character, and they stand as a rebuke to modern assumptions about criminal justice. The sermon argues that the biblical framework of restitution, capital punishment, and regulated corporal punishment is more humane than the modern prison system, and that Israel's conduct under these laws was intended to be a witness to surrounding nations of the glory of God — an obligation the church inherits in its own generation.
