John 12:44–50 records the conclusion of Jesus' public ministry, and in it He reiterates the three controlling themes of the entire Gospel: His identity as the eternal Son who is consubstantial with the Father, His mission as the Light of the world who came not to judge but to save those abiding in darkness, and His authority as the one who speaks the very words of God. The unbelief described in the surrounding context — including the merely historical faith of rulers who loved the praise of men — sets the stage for Jesus' final public proclamation. Those who reject the Son reject the Father; those who receive Him by grace through faith pass from darkness into everlasting life.
