Joshua 15-18
The allotment of Canaan to Judah, Ephraim, and Manasseh in Joshua 15–17 is not a tedious roster of city names but the concrete, geographical fulfillment of the covenant promises God made to Abraham in Genesis. Each border description and town name is evidence of divine fidelity, foreshadowing the bodily resurrection and new creation that the land of Canaan itself anticipated. Running through these chapters are three sober warnings — Judah, Ephraim, and Manasseh each failed to drive out the Canaanites — sowing the seeds of the syncretism and apostasy that will characterize the book of Judges. The Josephite tribes' complaint against their lot and their fear of iron chariots is set in sharp contrast to Caleb's faith, calling hearers to trust the power of God rather than retreat into faithless discontentment.
