The Good Fight of Faith
First Timothy 6:11–12 sets a man of God in sharp contrast to the false teachers Paul has just condemned: where they pursue comfort, ease, and financial gain, Timothy is commanded to flee, follow, fight, and hold fast. The sermon works through four imperatives — a necessary flight from wickedness, a righteous pursuit of six virtues, a good fight waged as both soldier and athlete, and a steadfast grip on the eternal life God has effectually given. The passage drives home that perseverance in the Christian life demands active, disciplined, Spirit-dependent effort, not passive coasting, and that the same effectual call that conquered Paul conquers every believer, however quiet their conversion.
