The Gratitude of the Apostle
Paul's opening lines to the Philippians (1:3–8) reveal an apostle whose gratitude, commendation, and affection are all grounded not in the merits of his friends but in the sovereign grace of God. The sermon works through three movements: the object and fruit of Paul's gratitude (prayer with joy), his commendation of the Philippians for their fellowship in the gospel and his confidence in God's preserving grace, and his oath-backed declaration of personal affection for them. The assurance of salvation rests not in the believer's perseverance but in the faithfulness of the God who begins and completes every good work, a truth the church is called to receive with gratitude and express through active participation in gospel ministry.
