The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Jim ButlerJohn 14:1–6

John 14:1–6 presents Jesus preparing his disciples for his imminent departure by addressing their soul trouble with both an exhortation and an encouragement. The preparation of heaven is not a logistical arrangement but the accomplishment of the cross, resurrection, and ascension — Christ himself is the way to the Father, the truth that undergirds every promise, and the life that sinners desperately need. The exclusivity of the gospel ('no one comes to the Father except through me') is inseparable from its accessibility: there are many mansions, and the door is the Lord Jesus Christ alone. The sermon calls believers to vanquish soul trouble through faith, to persevere in light of the certain return of Christ, and to offer the way of salvation freely to all who are dead in trespasses and sins.

The Arrest of Peter and John

Jim ButlerActs 4:1–12

Acts 4:1–12 presents the arrest of Peter and John by the Sanhedrin and Peter's Spirit-filled defense before the council, in which he declares Jesus of Nazareth — crucified and risen — as the sole name under heaven by which men must be saved. The sermon traces two movements: the sovereign advance of God's word despite the imprisonment of its preachers (the number of believers growing to five thousand), and the christological and soteriological content of Peter's address, which grounds salvation exclusively in Christ's active obedience, atoning death, and resurrection. The stone rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone, and those who refuse him will ultimately be crushed by him. The sermon applies these realities to the perpetual persecution of the church, the exclusivity of the gospel, and the urgent call to believe on Christ alone for salvation.

The Conversion of Cornelius

Jim ButlerActs 10:34–48

Peter's sermon to Cornelius in Acts 10:34–48 presents the irreducible content of apostolic gospel preaching: the impartiality of God toward all nations, the person and work of Jesus Christ (his sinless life, atoning death, and bodily resurrection), his exaltation as ordained judge of the living and the dead, and the exclusive promise that remission of sins comes through his name alone to all who believe. The sermon argues that a crossless or tombless message is no gospel at all — moralism and self-improvement cannot substitute for blood atonement and imputed righteousness. Believers are called to live daily in the light of Calvary, and the unconverted are warned that rejecting the only Savior means one day facing him as judge.
