Exhortations in Light of So Great a Salvation

Ryan Maljaars1 Peter 1:13–16

Peter's exhortations in 1 Peter 1:13–16 are grounded in the prior theological indicatives of the epistle: the elect have been saved by the triune God, unto an incorruptible inheritance, and must now respond with corresponding imperatives. Two commands govern this passage — set your hope fully on the grace to be revealed at Christ's return, and live a holy life in all your conduct — each requiring mental intentionality, self-control, and an understanding of the regenerate nature as 'children of obedience.' The sermon argues that sanctification involves both mortification of former lusts and vivification of the new nature of obedience, while insisting that this holiness contributes nothing to justification, which rests wholly on Christ's perfect active obedience and atoning death.
