The Feeding of the Five Thousand
John 6:1–15 presents the feeding of the five thousand as a sign — a theological event designed to reveal who Jesus is, not merely a remarkable act of provision. The miracle is set against the backdrop of the Passover and the Mosaic exodus, inviting comparison between the manna in the wilderness and Jesus as the living bread come down from heaven. The crowd's response — declaring him the prophet of Deuteronomy 18 and then attempting to seize him as a political king — exposes the persistent confusion between a physical, temporal messianic expectation and the spiritual, eternal salvation Christ actually came to accomplish. The sermon calls hearers to see in the bread and fish the One who supplies all things abundantly, who has both the compassion and the omnipotence to save every sinner who comes to him in faith.
