The Authority of the Church
Christ's declaration in Matthew 16:19–20 invests the church with delegated authority — expressed through the metaphor of keys — to bind and to loose in the kingdom of heaven. This authority is not absolute and belongs to no single officer; it is entrusted to the church as a whole to be exercised through the faithful preaching of the gospel and the discipline of the membership. The sermon works through three observations: identifying the stewards of this authority, the nature of the authority delegated, and the specific functions of binding and loosing. The congregation is called to prize Christ's church, exercise her God-given authority through the Word alone, and testify freely that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
