2 Samuel 18-19:8

Jim Butler2 Samuel 18

David's army defeats Absalom in the woods of Ephraim, but Absalom's death — hanging from a terebinth tree, killed by Joab in defiance of David's orders — reduces a day of military triumph to one of royal mourning. This exposition of 2 Samuel 18–19:8 argues that David's inconsolable grief over Absalom is not mere paternal sentiment but is inflamed by the guilt of his own sin in 2 Samuel 12, where Nathan pronounced that the sword would never depart from his house. The study applies two lessons to the congregation: a biblical realism about the inconsistency of every human being, and a call to faithful parenting in the fear of God.
