Genesis 18:16-33

Jim ButlerGenesis 18:16–33

Genesis 18:16–33 presents the Lord's evaluation of Sodom and Abraham's intercessory prayer on behalf of any righteous persons within the doomed cities of the plain. The passage establishes two theological axioms: divine omnipotence silences doubt concerning God's promises, and divine justice — 'shall not the judge of all the earth do right?' — silences every charge of divine arbitrariness. Abraham's descent from fifty to ten righteous persons is examined as a model of humble, persistent intercession, set within a wider biblical pattern running from Moses and Samuel through Jeremiah, Daniel, and the New Testament exhortations of 1 Timothy 2. The sermon calls God's people to regular, corporate intercessory prayer for all kinds of men, including civil authorities, grounded not in human merit but in the great mercies of God.
