Genesis 42 records the first meeting between Joseph and his brothers in Egypt, a narrative dense with divine providence, unresolved guilt, and the hidden hand of God directing events toward an end no human agent could have devised. The brothers' anguished confession — 'we are truly guilty concerning our brother' — illustrates that length of time neither diminishes sin nor lightens the conscience, and that only the blood of Christ can do what twenty years of elapsed time cannot. The chapter is traced through three movements: the brothers sent to Egypt, their two audiences with Joseph, and their return to Canaan — each segment demonstrating that God overrules the choices of sinful men to accomplish his redemptive purposes for his covenant people.
