The One Thing Needful

Jim ButlerLuke 10:38–42

Luke 10:38–42 presents two sisters whose contrasting responses to Christ's presence expose a perennial danger for every believer: allowing lawful, even godly, activity to crowd out the one thing needful. The sermon works through the difference between Martha's distracted service and Mary's devoted hearing, establishing that Christ's commendation of Mary is not a commendation of monasticism but of right priority — the kingdom of God and communion with Christ must govern the believer's ordering of life. Drawn from the parallel teaching of Matthew 6 and Luke 12, five consequences of carnal anxiety are identified, and the congregation is exhorted to repent of marginalizing Christ from the daily calendar and to attend faithfully to both the corporate preaching and the private reading of God's Word.

The Letter to Laodicea

Jim ButlerRevelation 3:14–22

Revelation 3:14–22 contains the most severe of the seven letters to the churches of Asia Minor: Laodicea receives no commendation, only a devastating indictment of lukewarmness, self-sufficiency, and spiritual blindness. Christ identifies himself as the Amen, the faithful and true witness, and the inaugurator of the new creation — credentials that expose the Laodiceans' faithlessness, their inaccurate self-assessment, and their complacency born of material prosperity. The threat of being vomited from Christ's mouth is not a final verdict but a conditional warning, issued in love, calling the church to zealous repentance and renewed communion with Christ. The sermon applies five Laodicean sins — pride, self-sufficiency, spiritual ignorance, misplaced trust in material wealth, and worldly compromise — as a mirror for any church prone to confuse outward comfort with genuine spiritual health.
