Paul's Prayer for the Colossians
Paul's prayer in Colossians 1:9–14 sets forth four characteristics of a walk worthy of the Lord: fruitfulness in good works, growth in the knowledge of God, strength for patient endurance, and thankfulness to the Father. The sermon argues that doctrine and practice are inseparable — the knowledge of God fuels the good works God prepared for his people — and that genuine thankfulness flows not from natural disposition but from the Spirit's work in those whom God has qualified, delivered, transferred, and redeemed. The ungodly are marked by ingratitude and failure to glorify God; the converted are called to a daily, Spirit-wrought thankfulness that honors God for every circumstance, not merely the pleasant ones.
