The Good Shepherd, Part 2

Jim ButlerJohn 5:7–10

John 10:7–10 presents Christ as the door of the sheep and the giver of abundant life, set in deliberate contrast to the false shepherds — thieves and robbers who steal, kill, and destroy. The sermon works through three movements: the identification of Christ as the exclusive door of access to God, the condemnation of corrupt religious leadership in Israel, and the commendation of Christ's ministry as one that saves, sustains, and enriches his sheep with life abundantly. Drawing on Jeremiah 23, Ezekiel 34, Isaiah 55, and Psalm 23, the sermon argues that the abundant life Christ promises is rooted in Old Testament prophecy, is grounded in definite atonement and the perseverance of the saints, and calls both unbelievers to come through the door and believers to respond with worship and gratitude.
