The Prophet on the Run

The book of Jonah confronts God's people with a persistent temptation: to allow hatred of the wicked to harden into contempt for the lost. Working through Jonah's flight from God's command, his forced submission in the belly of the fish, and his bitter displeasure at Nineveh's repentance, this sermon argues that prejudice against those we deem unworthy is a direct hindrance to the gospel mission God has assigned to his people. The sovereignty of God in dispensing mercy to whom he wills — not to whom we judge deserving — strips away every excuse for withholding the proclamation of Christ from any sinner, however offensive.
