Ask FGBC #8 - How could one man pay for the sins of the world in 36 hours?

Jim Butler

How could one man's death over a finite span of time pay for the sins of billions who deserve eternal punishment? The answer turns on two doctrines: federal headship and the infinite dignity of Christ's person. As Adam stood as covenant head for his posterity, so Christ — the eternal Son of God united to human nature in one person — stands as the last Adam, whose active and passive obedience together provide both forgiveness and a righteousness imputed to all who believe. The infinite nature of the sin and the infinite nature of the person who bears it are the key to understanding why the atonement is sufficient.

The Promise of Blessings and Curses (Part 1)

Jim ButlerLeviticus 26:1–13

Leviticus 26:1–13 opens with a promise of blessing conditioned on Israel's obedience — a structure that raises the question of how the Old Covenant relates to the New. This study expounds the covenantal framework underlying Leviticus 26, arguing that the Old Covenant operated as a covenant of works at the national level, distinct from the covenant of grace realized in Christ. The blessings of rain, peace, and God's presence promised to Israel find their fulfillment in the New Covenant, where the obedience that secures blessing is Christ's own, imputed to his people by faith alone.
