Remember the Prisoners

Jim ButlerHebrews 13:3

Hebrews 13:3 commands the continuous remembrance of imprisoned and mistreated believers — not a single annual observance, but an ongoing, active concern that moves toward prayer, tangible aid, and identification with those who suffer. The sermon expounds the duty to remember, the objects of that remembrance, and the theological basis in the unity of Christ's body, drawing on the suffering catalogue of Hebrews 11 to demonstrate that faith does not guarantee earthly triumph but does sustain believers through persecution. Ten practical applications ground the command in concrete acts: prayer for persecutors, imprecatory prayer for justice, financial giving, letter-writing, and the discipline of turning attention outward as a remedy for self-centeredness.

The High Priest of the New Covenant

Jim ButlerHebrews 7:20

Hebrews 7:20–8:6 presents Christ as the High Priest of the New Covenant, whose priestly office rests on four pillars: a divine oath, a permanent and unchangeable priesthood, a sinless character, and a heavenly ministry in the true tabernacle. Because Christ is the surety of the better covenant — bearing the full debt of sinners in the place of finite Levitical priests who died without completing what they began — He saves completely and finally all who come to God through Him. The sermon calls both unbelievers to abandon self-reliance and bow to this all-sufficient Savior, and believers to rest their assurance not on their own performance but on the unchangeable priesthood of Christ.
