Five Observations on Christ's Doctrine of Salvation (Part 2)

Cameron PorterJohn 6:35–51

John 6:35–51 presents a chain of divine activity in which the Father gives, the Son receives, and none are lost — a chain that rests entirely on sovereign, unconquerable grace. This second installment in a series on Christ's doctrine of salvation expounds two final observations: the unconquerable power of regenerating grace (irresistible grace), illustrated by Ezekiel's valley of dry bones and the raising of Lazarus, and the infallibility of the divine embrace paired with the indefectibility of those embraced (the preservation and perseverance of the saints). The sermon closes with a call to ground assurance not in self-examination or experiential motions but in the decree of election, the merits of Christ, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit, and with a direct gospel plea to any who do not yet know Christ.

The Abrahamic Covenant

Jim ButlerGenesis 15

Genesis 15 records the formal ratification of the Abrahamic covenant, in which God alone passes between the divided animals — a self-maledictory oath binding God himself to the fulfillment of his promises to Abraham. This unilateral act reveals the sovereign grace and indefectibility of the covenant of grace: God stakes his own being on the oath, and that oath finds its ultimate enactment in the blood of Jesus Christ at Calvary. The sermon traces three lessons from this ceremony — the nature of the covenant of promise, the indefectibility of God's covenant, and the imputed righteousness by which Abraham and all who share his faith are justified — calling hearers to find assurance and comfort in the God who cannot fail.

The Adamic Covenant

Jim ButlerGenesis 3

Genesis 3:14–24 records the first historical expression of the covenant of grace — what covenant theologians call the Adamic covenant. This sermon works through the fall of Adam and Eve, the immediate context of that catastrophe, and then the divine initiative by which God addresses the serpent, the woman, and the man with both curse and promise. The protoevangelium of Genesis 3:15 stands at the centre: God sovereignly places enmity between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman, pointing forward to the One who would crush the serpent's head through suffering at Calvary. The sermon calls hearers to see themselves either in the first Adam under condemnation, or in the second Adam under grace, and to trust the covenant-keeping God who seeks out sinners and covers them with what they cannot provide for themselves.

Five Truths that Demonstrate God's Glory, Part 1

Jim ButlerEphesians 1:3–14

Ephesians 1:3–14 presents salvation as the coordinated work of the triune God — Father electing, Son redeeming, Spirit sealing — all directed to one end: the praise of God's glory. This sermon expounds the first three of five truths grounded in that passage: total depravity, unconditional election, and definite atonement. The preacher argues that only when sinners reckon with the depth of human corruption can they rightly appreciate the sovereign grace that saves, and that the proper response to these doctrines is not polemics but doxology.

The Redemptive Act of God

Jim ButlerColossians 2:13–15

Colossians 2:13–15 sets out four distinct facets of God's one redemptive act accomplished through Christ: regeneration of the spiritually dead, forgiveness of all trespasses, cancellation of the debt of law-breaking, and disarming of demonic principalities and powers at the cross. The totality of this divine work leaves no room for human supplement — not asceticism, not mysticism, not legalism — because God in Christ has secured the salvation of his elect entirely and irrevocably. The sermon presses believers toward grounding their daily assurance not in personal performance but in these objective acts of God recorded in Scripture.
