Deuteronomy 27

Jim ButlerDeuteronomy 27

Deuteronomy 27 marks the transition from the stipulation section of Israel's covenantal constitution to the sanctions section, where blessings and curses are attached to covenant faithfulness or breach. This exposition works through the future covenant renewal ceremony at Mounts Ebal and Gerizim (vv. 1–10) and the twelve maledictory curses pronounced upon covenant-breakers (vv. 11–26), showing that the curses addressed both external conduct and the secret intentions of the heart. The self-maledictory 'amen' sworn by Israel on Ebal anticipates the curse Christ bore as covenant head and mediator, whose personal, entire, exact, and perpetual obedience fulfills what no Israelite could render. The law's function, then, is to expose human sinfulness and drive the covenant people outside themselves to the Redeemer.
