Ask FGBC #11: What will our days in Heaven look like?

Jim Butler

A question about the nature of heavenly existence — whether eternity will feel like endless sameness — draws out a sustained reflection on the creator-creature distinction, the infinity of God, and the progressive unfolding of divine glory to finite creatures. Drawing from Ephesians 2:7's reference to 'the ages to come,' the discussion argues that eternity for creatures will be temporal and successive, not static, because God is inexhaustible and finite creatures can never comprehend the infinite. The corporate dimension of heavenly worship, including Christ's own role in leading his people in the praise of God, is offered as a counterweight to individualistic or tedium-haunted conceptions of the eternal state.

The Regulation of the Church's Worship

Jim Butler1 Timothy 3:14–16

What gives the church the right to dictate the forms of its own worship — and what happens when it does? Expounding 1 Timothy 3:14–16, this sermon grounds the regulative principle of worship in the nature of the church itself: because the church is the house of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth, God alone determines what is done within it. The sermon surveys the pastoral epistles to show that Scripture consistently prioritizes sound doctrine over therapeutic or culturally-tailored substitutes. The practical call is to use the means God has ordained — corporate prayer, preaching, psalm-singing — trusting that Christ is genuinely present in the midst of his gathered people.
