Living Water and True Worship

Jim ButlerJohn 4:1–30

John 4:1–30 presents Jesus in conversation with a Samaritan woman as the fullest exposition of true worship in the Gospels. The sermon traces four interlocking themes — living water, the woman's moral history, the nature of worship, and the identity of the Messiah — arguing that conviction of sin and faith in Christ are prerequisites to genuine worship of the triune God. True worshippers are not self-initiating; the Father seeks them out and draws them through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. The sermon closes with the inseparable connection between worship and witness: deep, Trinitarian worship is the root from which faithful evangelism grows.
