CTF 2025 - Session 3 - Exploring God’s Impassibility

James Dolezal

God's immutability and impassibility, confessed in 1689 LBCF 2.1 as foundational divine attributes, are not cold abstractions but the very ground of the gospel's freeness and the perfection of God's love. This session from a Reformed theology conference works through the classical theistic framework: because God is pure act, wholly self-sufficient in being, he cannot undergo change or be moved to new states of affection by creatures. Counterintuitively, this means God's love is not diminished but infinitely surpassed by passionate human love — for an impassible love is uncaused, unbounded, and purely beneficent, making sola gratia coherent and certain.
