The Coming of the Kingdom

Jim ButlerMatthew 16:28

Matthew 16:28 records Jesus' promise that some standing with him would not taste death before seeing the Son of Man coming in his kingdom — a promise whose referent has generated significant interpretive disagreement. This sermon argues exegetically and theologically that the event in view is the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, presenting seven lines of evidence: the contextual sense of 'some,' parallel passages in Matthew, other New Testament texts, the connection to Christ's resurrection and ascension, Old Testament covenantal prophecy (especially Deuteronomy 28 and Daniel 9), the theological commentary of Hebrews 8, and the principle that judgment is itself a sign of the kingdom's arrival. The destruction of AD 70 is presented not as a relic of ancient history but as a covenantal and typological event that vindicates Christ's kingship, foreshadows the final judgment, and calls every hearer to take refuge in the Lamb before the great day of his wrath.
